What can you expect from our Primary School?

The Primary Curriculum

IPC

The International Primary curriculum is tailored to relevant age groups; rather than teaching specific subjects in isolation, it focuses instead on themed ‘units’ of work. A whole range of different subjects are incorporated within each unit, meaning students could explore Geography, Literacy, Computing or Art, all within the context of the same overarching topic.

Mileposts

International Primary Curriculum milestones are geared towards children of different ages- Early Years, Milepost 1, Milepost 2 and Milepost 3.

Each one consists of IPC Topics and units of work .  containing a wide variety of engaging and  fun subject matter, chosen to inspire interest and curiosity.

A Curriculum That Engages and Inspires

At Benbridge Academy, we understand the importance of these formative years in a child’s education. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, offering a rich tapestry of learning experiences across core subjects such as English, Maths, Science, as well as a whole host of others, such as History, Creative Arts and Languages. We also place a strong emphasis on digital literacy, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience that is relevant to the 21st Century.

Developing the Whole Child

Beyond academic excellence, we are dedicated to the holistic development of our students. We aim to nurture confident, creative, and socially responsible individuals. Our curriculum incorporates lessons on emotional well-being, social skills, and environmental stewardship, preparing students to be thoughtful and active participants in their communities. Dedicated PSHE lessons and Tutor time provide further opportunity for personal growth and development.

Interactive, Personalised Learning

Learning in our virtual classrooms is live, interactive, and full of energy. Our experienced and passionate teachers use innovative teaching methods and technology to bring lessons to life. Each student is recognised as an individual with a unique learning style, and our approach is tailored to meet these diverse needs, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported. Independent study skills are developed allowing learning to be personalised further, with students being challenged or supported as required.

A Warm and Supportive Community

At Benbridge Academy, the sense of community is strong. We create a warm, child-centred environment where students can form friendships, collaborate on projects, and engage in lively discussions. Regular virtual events and activities further enhance the sense of belonging and community among our students.

Empowering Students for the Future

Our goal is to empower our students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive in the 21st century. We encourage critical thinking, creativity, and digital fluency, equipping our students to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future confidently.

Primary Education FAQs

For Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) the school day runs from 9 am until 2.00 pm, depending on the year group and your individual timetable. Live lessons take place throughout the day, with independent study sessions built in.  An additional benefit of online education is an increased degree of flexibility; at Benbridge Academy, we are committed to giving all students the learning pathway they want, even if this means timetabling lessons outside of the ’normal’ school day.

Benbridge Academy’s Behaviour Policy and statement of behaviour management can be found on the school’s website. In brief, all members of the school community are educated in the parameters of acceptable behaviour in the terms outlined in this policy. However, studies have shown that incidents of bullying (including cyberbullying) drop dramatically when students are learning remotely. As educators, whether online or in person, it is our responsibility, not only to provide a safe and secure environment, where students are free from bullying and harassment, but to facilitate opportunities for empathic reasoning and personal development. Therefore, our experienced pastoral team deliver regular PSHE sessions and work with all parties, should the need arise, to bring about positive resolutions to any issues that arise. Above all, Benbridge Academy believes that the best way to ensure good conduct is to give praise and nurture a positive learning environment for all.

As an online school, Benbridge Academy’s dress code simply requires students to wear appropriate clothing at all times. Students are encouraged to be well-presented and ready for each day of learning.

Mobile phones and electronic devices – other than those they are using to access lessons – should not be used during approved online periods of learning. The same applies to inappropriate tab usage on students’ devices (switching to social media sites and gaming etc).

Every student at Benbridge Academy has a Personalised Education Plan (PEP). This includes planned intervention and support tutoring schedules for students who need further guidance. Our subject specialists are always available and ready to arrange online meetings as and when required.

Our ‘open door’ communication policy means that parents and carers can communicate with subject teachers and pastoral form tutors at any time during the school day. Email addresses will be readily supplied upon a family’s admission to Benbridge Academy. Parents and carers are also welcome to contact the Principal regarding matters they wish to raise to the school management. All queries and concerns receive the highest levels of prompt attention.

Our highly experienced and creative teachers have a wide range of ways of making practical subjects engaging and interactive, even though delivered online. We will work with students and parents should resources be required for specific areas of learning and virtual alternatives (for example Science experiments) are extremely successful when studying particular topics.

At the point of entry, all students and parents will be involved in the creation of a Personalised Education Plan (PEP). This would give us the opportunity to get to know your child and the PEP would include provision for areas of special educational need. Our experienced and dedicated staff are fully committed to making learning accessible to all students.

This is often cited as one of the drawbacks of online education. However, this is not the case. Our young people exist in a world that is very different from that of their parents and grandparents. Online communication is the norm for our children and that includes the formulation of friendships and effective, collaborative learning. Further to this, at Benbridge Academy, as well as nurturing online social areas for our students, we look forward to offering our students opportunities to attend live events and field trips. The warmth and approachability of our highly trained and experienced teachers ensure the best opportunities for all in a safe environment, free from the limitations of traditional peer pressure.

The Department for Education has developed a non-statutory scheme to accredit UK based providers of full-time online education. The scheme is called the online education accreditation scheme (‘’OEAS’) and some online schools – who are registered in the UK -have opted into this scheme. However, it is clear that many parents have chosen alternatives to traditional schools due to the overly prescriptive nature of their governance. Whilst Benbridge Academy holds itself to extremely high standards – those which would be required for accreditation – it is not limited by such guidelines, thus enabling us – and the families in our community – to work together to create a more bespoke educational pathway that meets the needs of individual children, without limitation.

All you require is a good internet connection, a laptop computer or tablet, preferably with a keyboard attachment. Your device should include a camera and speakers to aid live communication. All learning materials and apps are provided.

In our Primary school, all teachers use ongoing formative assessment to inform teaching and learning and monitor progress. We do not believe in causing children unnecessary anxiety by over-testing year on year; deep knowledge of our students allows teachers to assess and monitor progress on a regular basis without the need for formal testing, especially in the Primary years. All assessments are recorded on our online platform for parents and students to refer to. At Benbridge Academy, students’ grades are in line with national and international standards to ensure that our families are fully aware of their children’s progress, areas for development and accurately assessed successes. In addition, work is returned with positive comments, geared towards further progress and development, to ensure that all marking is ‘formative’ and that students are aware of what they need to do to improve. All grades are centrally collated by the school leadership who use this data to inform strategies for improvement.

Please check the admissions page for relevant dates and points of entry. The process usually involves a face-to-face meeting with parents and students, followed by completion of the application form.
