Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 is a warm and nurturing environment, designed to provide a stimulating and engaging learning experience for our Primary Students. Units of work are delivered through live and interactive lessons each week, while students are encouraged to develop collaborative and independent study skills through a range of interesting projects and assignments.

What does the school day look like?

In the Primary School, each year group will have a dedicated class teacher, who teaches the class the majority of subjects throughout the school day; your class teacher is responsible for delivering the curriculum, as well as caring for you and supporting you on your learning journey. You will be able to contact your teacher during classes and privately, via our online platform, throughout the school day.

Your timetable will be a mixture of live, online lessons and independent study sessions. You will be able to see your classmates throughout the live lesson and be given opportunities to interact with them, and your teacher, in a variety of different ways. During the day, there will also be chances to join your peers in breakout rooms; this will enable you to collaborate on projects, share ideas and develop group work skills. You will even be able to connect with your friends at break times between classes, on certain days, so that you have the chance to socialise and build relationships.

You will be taught the core subjects of Maths, English and Science, as well as a broad range of other interesting topics such as Humanities (Geography and History), Computing, Music, Languages, Art, PSHE and Religious Education. These may be combined through thematic, topic work or alternated throughout the term and other subjects may be offered; you will also be given the opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities.

Your teacher will plan your lessons using a range of different applications and technology, to enable you to work effectively online. Tasks may take a variety of forms; written work, discussions, group work, quizzes, live worksheets – the list is endless. Work will be marked by your teacher online and you will be given regular feedback; you will be encouraged to engage in your own learning journey, understanding what you need to do to improve and make progress.

There will be time scheduled throughout the week for independent, directed study which will vary in length and expectation, depending on age and year group. This could take a variety of forms; consolidation tasks, research, practise questions and more.  Don’t worry if you are unsure of anything; your class teacher will be available for support, guidance and even one-to-one conversations, as and when required.

PSHE underpins everything we do at Benbridge Academy; your health and wellbeing is our top priority. Specific PSHE sessions will be delivered within your timetable and we also hold school assemblies, where we will celebrate your achievements and share positive messages with our school community. This will give you a chance to see all of your fellow students, across the different year groups and be part of something very special.

UNITS OF WORK

Through the topic of Superheroes, students develop speaking and listening skills and are inspired to expand their vocabulary as they engage in fiction and non-fiction writing. They learn about real-life ‘superheros’ and the impact they have on their communities, travelling back in time to explore key historical figures and understand why they were so important.

By exploring the world around them, students learn to be globally minded, responsible citizens. Their journey will take them across continents, oceans and into the solar system! Sustainability and Global Warming are introduced and discussed, while students are encouraged to ask questions as they collaborate on group projects, developing their group work and presentation skills.

Our young people spend much of their time online; this unit allows them to explore how other people may use computers, and the internet, for work or as part of their daily lives. We explore how connections can be made, all around the world, and how to conduct research using credible and reliable sources, keeping ourselves safe online and using the internet responsibly.

Who made the universe? Where do storms come from? The Ancient Greeks had the answers! Studying a range of fascinating myths and legends, students will use the art of oral storytelling to develop their creative writing skills. Myths will be retold, reimagined and rewritten, as students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding, separating fact from fiction as they go!
