When anxiety makes school attendance feel impossible, there is another way.
If your child is experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), you may feel exhausted, worried and unsure where to turn. Every morning can become a battle, with tears, panic, physical symptoms and overwhelming anxiety making it impossible for your child to attend school.
Our specialist online school provides a calm, supportive and flexible alternative where students can continue their education while rebuilding confidence, reducing anxiety and looking positively towards the future.
At Benbridge Academy, we understand that children experiencing EBSA are not being "difficult" or "defiant". They are communicating that something about their current educational environment is no longer manageable.

How Can Benbridge Academy Help?
A Calm Learning Environment
Students learn from the safety and familiarity of home.Removing busy classrooms, crowded corridors and the daily pressures of travelling to school allows many students to begin learning again without overwhelming anxiety.
Flexible Learning
We recognise that recovery is not always linear.Where appropriate, personalised timetables can help students gradually increase their engagement while maintaining access to a broad curriculum.
Small Class Sizes
Every student is known personally.Small class sizes allow teachers to build trusting relationships and recognise when students need additional encouragement or support.Students are never just another face in the classroom.
Dedicated Form Tutor
Every student has a dedicated Form Tutor who gets to know them as an individual, monitors wellbeing, celebrates achievements and communicates regularly with parents. They are a consistent source of support throughout the year.
Personalised Support
Every child experiences EBSA differently. We take time to understand: what triggers anxiety, what helps them feel safe and how they learn best. This enables us to personalise support wherever possible.
Rebuilding Confidence One Step at a Time
For many families, success doesn't begin with examinations. It begins with: logging into a lesson; speaking to a teacher; asking a question; completing an assignment; enjoying learning again. At Benbridge Academy, we celebrate every step forward. Confidence grows gradually, and every achievement matters.
Rebuilding Confidence
Many families come to us after months—or even years—of struggling to find the right educational environment. Our goal is not simply to deliver lessons. Our goal is to help every child:enjoy learning again; develop confidence; feel successful; achieve recognised qualifications; prepare positively for the future. For many students, success begins with simply logging into their first lesson. From there, confidence grows one step at a time.
Working in Partnership with Parents
Parents know their children better than anyone else. We believe successful education is built on strong partnerships between students, families and teachers. Regular communication helps ensure we understand each child's needs and celebrate progress together.
Live Interactive Lessons
Students remain connected through live online lessons taught by experienced subject specialists, with discussions, collaborative activities and opportunities to build confidence alongside peers. Students remain part of a real school community while learning in an environment that feels emotionally safe.
Supporting Neurodivergent Learners
Many students experiencing EBSA are also neurodivergent. Benbridge Academy has experience supporting students with: Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Sensory processing differences, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Our flexible approach allows us to respond to individual needs rather than expecting every child to learn in the same way.
Every family’s journey is different.
Watching your child struggle with school attendance can be incredibly difficult.
If you’re wondering whether Benbridge Academy could be the right fit for your child, we’d love to hear your story.
Many parents tell us they feel isolated and worried about their child’s future. At Benbridge Academy, we believe every child deserves an education where they feel safe, valued and able to succeed. If mainstream education is no longer working, there is another path forward.
Together, we can help your child rebuild confidence, reconnect with learning and achieve their potential.
Online School to Support EBSA FAQs
Yes. Students interact with teachers and classmates during live lessons, collaborative activities, breakout rooms and wider school opportunities, helping them build confidence and positive relationships over time.
Students continue following a broad curriculum leading to recognised GCSE and International GCSE qualifications while benefiting from a learning environment tailored to their needs.
We will support you in applying for access arrangements, should your child demonstrate that they would benefit from access arrangements such as extra time or rest breaks during exams; any EHCP or other professional documents (such as medical diagnosis) would also be used to support the application. We also offer online examinations for a range of subjects, meaning that your child can take the exams from home, if they are too anxious to go to an examination centre.
Yes. Students attend live online lessons delivered by experienced subject specialists, alongside guided independent learning and personalised support.
We encourage cameras to be on where possible because this helps build relationships and engagement. However, we recognise that this can be challenging for some students initially and work sensitively with families to help children build confidence at a pace that is appropriate for them.
We begin with a Personalised Education Plan, as part of the registration process, which gives us the background information we need. From here, our SEND Lead will create any necessary strategy documents that will outline all of the ways in which your child needs support (for example, rest breaks, extra time to answer questions, different modes of communication). Every child, regardless of a SEND diagnosis, is treated as an individual; every child deserves to have their thoughts and feelings taken into consideration, and their needs met, so they are comfortable and safe in their learning enviornment.
